September 22, 2012 Event

On a very pleasant Saturday morning, around 7:00AM with temperatures in the fifties, over 80 kayakers started gathering at Fort Hardy Park in Schuylerville, NY. Our goal was to paddle 16 miles down the Hudson River to Mechanicville, NY. At 8:00AM we launched.

With temperatures getting into the low seventies on a partly cloudy morning, it looked like a great day for a paddle. We would paddle to Admiral’s Marina in Stillwater, NY, meet up with another 40 plus kayakers, and together we would paddle thru locks 4 and 3 to finish at the boat dock in Mechanicville.

Little did we know, or expect, that we would have 15 to 20 mph headwinds all day, with gusts to 30 mph. It was tough going against that wind all day and a few didn’t make it, but the ones who did were glad they finished and were vowing to do it again next year.

I was blown away by the turn out. No pun intended. We had 3 meso survivors join us that day, one of course being my daughter Linda, and over 130 kayakers made it to the water that day. It was so amazing to see all those kayaks going down the river and through the locks. The help and support that day was also amazing.

We are planning the same thing again in 2013, on September 21st. We’re shooting for 200 kayakers this year. With a little luck and a lot of work, I think we can do it. I’ve been very fortunate with the people I have met, my friends and my family, that have helped with our cause.

Our goal was to raise awareness of mesothelioma, and to raise funds for much needed research. We raised about $12,000 dollars all together, which went directly to the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation.

We’ll be needing volunteers again this year. If you wish to get involved in a great cause and a fun event please contact me via email at

See you on the water.
